Gentoo everyone ?
I came across an interesting site yesterday. Well the site is actually kind of mocking Gentoo Linux users, but it’s so funny and true. The guy calls it “Mandrake Expatriate Syndrome” for some reason.
There is another one with all quotes from Gentoo forums or Slashdot comments.
My Gentoo experience went like this. I tried to install Gentoo twice in my life, both of the times I went with stage2 install. Read the manual/installation guide and all that, I came to the point where I had to emerge my software(X, GNOME, Firefox,..) I thought to myself “this is not so bad, I’ll just came back in a couple of hours when all is done, I’ll login to my GNOME desktop and be happy with the performance boost”. I came back two or three hours later, the gcc output was still scrolling on my screen. I sat in front of my computer looking at the screen and after another hour I remember saying to myself “this is not worth it”. What about when the new X, GNOME or OpenOffice comes out, will I have to wait another “I don’t know how many” hours ? I deleted the whole thing installed Fedora back on and in 20min I was back in my GNOME desktop. The second time was about the same.
I guess I’m just not Gentoo material. I admire you guys, you really need to have time and will to go through all this. And I guess it must feel good to have all your software compiled just for your computer.
You just need to have that in you, I don’t.
