Running XGL finally

I’m a happy XGL running bastard, enjoying all the OpenGL accelerated X eyecandy, that compiz plugins offer me.
It’s not easy to get XGL running when there’s no binary packages available for your distro, it really isn’t. I had to compile a whole bunch of stuff, which was “so much fun”… see the post below. But it’s all good now.

It runs very smooth, I didn’t experienced any crash or lock up so far. I have few issues though: video only works with x11(and that means no full screen or screen resizing available), 3D games don’t work either and the alt tab partly works, it doesn’t show the pictures of apps open, just a blank white space. But I’m sure I’ll fix these minor annoyances in no time.

I’ll probably write a post on how I did it, if I’ll have time and if any Fedora hacker will be interested. :)

I haven’t gotten the 3D drivers working for this intel card but in the future I might manage to get XGL running. Pain is it either runs completely or not at all.

Going to show off your desktop via a laptop in public now? ^^

    Cheers,
    Pascal

I think I’m going to have to show this to all of those bastards that are telling me they’re going to buy Vista because it looks so much nicer than XP. I mean, come on! That desktop is so beautiful (manly too, lol)!

Of course, it would be so much better as a cylinder … hehe :-P

You think there would be any chance of a video of some of the effects in action?

Hey, it runs completely for me :) show it to public, hell yeah.

Vista… he he, let’s wait till 2008 or 2009 and maybe microsoft will release it.
I’ll see what I can do about the video in action.

Could you give us a little info on what hardware your running XGL on? Like what video card, cpu arch etc…
    thanks, great shots!

That’s on my laptop PentiumM 1.73GHz Dothan, 1024Mb RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 6600Go 128Mb.
But this is way too much for the simple XGL OpenGL functionality.. you seriously don’t need that capable hardware, I know it runs smoothly on Athlon 1600+, 512Mb RAM and GeForce4 64Mb.
